The Classic Theatre decided in the mid-90's that it would be a good idea to have space dedicated to the fine arts as well as the performing arts, thus creating a beautiful venue to hold receptions, exhibitions as well as something visual for guests to the theatre to enjoy during intermissions.
The upper gallery or mezzanine is extremely beautiful as it overlooks the lobby, surrounded by a fine spindle railing. Burgundy carpeting and soothing wall tones add to the ambiance to this space
The Classic Theatre would like to thanks Laura Landers for her outstanding work as the volunteer curator of the Mezzanine Gallery for the last 12 years! From 1998 to August 2010 -- the gallery walls have been filled with the beautiful artworks of artist from here and abroad.
As of September 2010 the new curator will be Calvin Knight with the help of Cobalt Poet Laureate Ann Margetson who will also serve as Mr.Knights assistant and the Mezzanine Gallery Hostess.
The Mezzanine Gallery books exhibitions for a two month stay and the theatre is booked well into 2011. Originally the space had been rented out to local clubs and local artists, but as time passes by, it has become a well sought after exhibition space for more regional artists. Their comments have been that it is one of the more beautiful spaces they have had the pleasure of hanging in. In fact--many artists are members of the Northern Ontario Artists Association (NOAA), the Ontario Arts Council (OAC), and the Canadian Society of Painters and Watercolorists Association (CSPWA).
Calvin Knight is an active member of the Cobalt Classic Theatre Board. He has served as the Theatre photographer for the past three years. Mr. Knights main interest is black and white photgraphy and he enjoys collecting the photographic history of the Classic Theatre. Calvin is also an avid volunteer and can be found throughout the area at various local functions volunteering his photographic skills.
Poet Laureate of Cobalt, Ontario 2008 - 2010
(Temiskaming Shores to Temagami)
Ann Margetson was appointed poet laureate for the first annual Spring Pulse Poetry Festival, held in Cobalt, Ontario. She was born in England in 1934, managed to overcome the trauma of the war that gave her a very tender heart. She came to Canada in the spring of 1973 and now has four living children and eleven grandchildren. She was influenced by a wonderful teacher who helped her love words and especially poetry. This enabled her to develop a talent for short stories and poems during the school years. So far she has written well over 500 poems and many short stories for children and adults. The honour of being called poet laureate has surpassed her wildest dreams. Since becoming poet laureate she has composed close to 100 poems.

Traveling and gardening are the inspirations for the art I create. Gardening fulfills me with joy and happiness. For me it is a different art form, sculpturing the landscape, making something happen, planning for the future... read more > >
