Classic Theatre Announces 'Great Northern Thaw'

December, 23 2008

For Immediate Release: Winter just got a little bit warmer at the Classic Theatre. As of December 22, 2008 they are announcing a full festival line-up for the first week in February. The ‘Great Northern Thaw’ offers something for every musical taste.

January 30th kicks off the festival with Canadian songstress Serena Ryder. Ryder is the 2008 Juno Award Winner for New Artist of the Year, and award previously won by Feist and Avril Lavigne. Ryder’s ‘Weak in the Knees’ spent several weeks on the Canadian Charts, as did her ‘Good Morning Starshine.’ Ryder is at the apex of her career in Canadian music and will be performing at the Classic Theatre with Royal Wood.

On February 2nd, the Classic Theatre will play host to punk band GOB and favorites The Johnstones. GOB fans have traveled throughout Canada to take in their blend of punk and rock which has been featured in several movie and video game soundtracks. The Classic Theatre is proud to partner with Howey Bros. in support of this show.

Country fans have been waiting for the February 5th presentation of Doc Walker with Tara Oram at the Classic Theatre. Currently, the only room available for these three multi-CCMA Award Winners is on the waiting list.

Kardinal Offishall, an icon of Canadian urban and hip hop is bringing his rash of untamed melodies to the Classic Theatre stage on February 6th. Kardinal’s performance in Cobalt will mark the first time that the Classic stage has ever played host to an artist in this genre and it has sparked a great deal of attention and praise from local hip hop fans.

Smouldering on the back-burner is the final act in this week-long line up of Canadian music greats. The popular ‘Plain White T’s’ is ‘scheduled but not confirmed’ to close out the ‘Great Northern Thaw’ on February 7th. Tickets to this show will be released at a later date.

Classic Theatre GM, Angela Drainville-Ashick is thrilled to present such exciting and current artists to the people of her home town. “When I was young, this just didn’t happen here,” she said. “it used to be that if you really wanted to see a show you had to go to Toronto. Now, you can see people like Serena Ryder…people at the top of their game…right here in Cobalt. We are on the map!”

Tickets for Serena Ryder, GOB and Kardinal Offishall go on sale Christmas Eve at 9:00 am at the Classic Theatre Box Office. Names can be added to the waiting list for Doc Walker by calling the Box Office at (705) 679-8080. The Plain White T’s tickets will be announced as soon as they are confirmed.

They have had two number one hits on the Canadian Singles Chart and six number one videos on the Much Music Countdown. Their self-titled debut album went double platinum in 2005, and their most recent release ‘Famous Last Words’ has already gone platinum. What’s next for the Canadian Rock sensation? A gig at the Classic Theatre on June 22.

“This is absolutely unbelievable,” says Classic Theatre General Manager, Angela Drainville-Ashick. “That a group of this caliber and current level of popularity is going to come to our area and perform in our venue is a real honour.”

Drainville-Ashick is quick to point out the hard work of Classic Theatre volunteers and Board of Directors in making this happen. “People come to the theatre and they might not realize the level of hospitality that we provide to our performers. We have taken very seriously our role in entertaining the professional artists who come here and we finally have a reputation that is getting us noticed.”

Outside the inner workings of the Classic Theatre, people are very excited for Hedley to make their entrance on the local stage. Folks are talking about the limited seating and the huge number of fans that are going to want tickets. Tickets are going on sale on May 11th at 1:00 pm and are $45 each. There will be a limit of four tickets for those in line. Tickets will not be released to ticket outlets or phone sales until May 12th at 9:00 am.

“It’s a rare opportunity for people to see such a huge act in such an intimate venue,” Drainville-Ashick explains. “Those people fortunate enough to get tickets will be given a really special experience.”
